WAK GmbH

WAK Rückbau- und Entsorgungs- GmbH (WAK GmbH, WAK Decommissioning and Waste Management Company) pools all activities relating to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and waste management on the premises of the former Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, today´s KIT Campus North. Partner of WAK GmbH is the Federation-owned Energiewerke Nord GmbH (EWN). The company is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research und the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry of Finance and Economics. 

Tasks of WAK GmbH:

1. Processing and disposal of radioactive residues and wastes by the Central De-contamination Department (HDB)

2. Decommissioning of the shut-down nuclear facilities on the site:

  • Karlsruhe Reprocessing Plant (WAK-plant)
  • Compact Sodium-cooled Nuclear Reactor Facility (KNK)
  • Multi-purpose Research Reactor (MZFR)
  • Research Reactor 2 (FR2)
  • Hot Cells (HZ), shut-down sections
  • Smaller research facilities formerly operated with a license under the Atomic Energy Act

Nuclear test facilities that are still in operation on the site will also be assigned to WAK GmbH for decommissioning after their shutdown.
