What is the AVR?
The term "AVR" stands for the consortium of the experimental reactor in Jülich. Between 1967 and 1988 with the "pebble bed high temperature reactor", the company operated the hottest reactor in the world.
After 21 years of power and research operations, initially the "Safe Enclosure" of the installation was envisaged. To this end, immediately after obtaining the license, unneeded parts of the plant were dismantled and the fuel elements removed.

The acquisition of AVR GmbH by EWN GmbH (Energiewerke Nord) in 2003, a society that deconstructs nuclear facilities on behalf of the German Federal State, was synonymous with a change of the project's objective. In an administrative agreement between the Federal State and the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, instead of "Safe Enclosure", "Complete Dismantling" of the installation was agreed on.
The final step in the project, the creation of a "green field" site, brings the demolition work to an end and the site is returned to the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia.
